We’ve all had it before – that awful feeling of needing to go but not being able to. At best it’s uncomfortable and at worst it’s agonizingly painful. When you add timing in to the mix, it can crop up at the most inopportune moment and ruin your day. A lot of people discover that simply changing your sitting position with a Squatty Potty can do wonders!
But good old sodium bicarbonate is one of my go-to emergency solutions. Knowing how to use organic, food-grade baking soda for constipation can save your day and leave you feeling on top of the world! (psst, it’s also great for acid reflux!)

The Worst Timing

I remember one of the worst times I suffered with constipation. Somehow it always happens when I’m on the road. I was travelling in South Asia when it struck…
What should have been an amazing day enjoying sights, sounds and smells I’ve never experienced before quickly became a, well, crappy day. I was experiencing a horrible belly ache and spent a lot of time trying to poop . And on toilets that were not the kind of places you want to spend any time in! On top of that, what did manage to come out, had a tarry color. Later on, it turned out I had developed an ulcer in a very unfortunate spot. But the cause wasn’t as bad as my wild imagination had made of the black color of my stool. I was lucky that my traveling companion knew about the baking soda and constipation hack, and it literally saved the rest of the trip…PHEW!
So it’s always handy to know about using baking soda for constipation wherever you may be. But the first way to combat constipation is prevention. How can you avoid getting constipated in the first place?
The first step is knowing why it happens:
Dried Out
Most commonly constipation is caused by hard faeces which are difficult to expel. This happens because the colon has absorbed too much of the water from the food passing through it. Also the slower the food moves, the more time it spends in the colon. This means a greater risk of water being drawn out.
This means it’s important to make sure that you drink enough water. I’m guessing you already knew that it’s important to stay hydrated! But now you know it can help you fight constipation too. Drink at least two liters spread out through the day.
Not Enough Fiber
This is why your diet is another important factor – eating enough fiber is key. Fiber will keep things moving at the right pace, so it’s important to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your diet.
Travel
Well it turns out that one cause of constipation is travel! Who would have guessed it? More specifically it’s the disruption to our regular routine that it causes.
Dairy & Junk Food
Something to avoid eating is too much dairy, especially cheese. Too much junk food will also cause this through a mix of binding foods and a lack of fiber.
Too Much Sitting
One of the other common factors causing constipation is a lack of exercise, or remaining immobile for too long. This is bad news for desk jockeys, but a timely reminder to stay active to make sure everything continues to work as it should.
Your knight in shining armor is to use baking soda and water for constipation. Simply mix one teaspoon of baking soda with 1/4 cup of water and drink quickly.
It works because baking soda is a bicarbonate. When it enters your body, it forces air to escape which relieves some of the pain and discomfort caused by this build up.
Baking soda for constipation is one of the oldest and well known home constipation remedies going. It’s been used millions and millions of times.
However as with almost any medicine, there have been rare cases of bad reactions to taking it.
The link between baking soda and constipation has been known for an age. Since the 1920’s, there have been 18 cases of people’s stomachs rupturing associated with baking soda. There has been one death associated to baking soda and water for constipation, in 1939.
An independent study into this phenomenon found that:
…baking soda produced too little carbon dioxide in a short period to be a likely cause, except possibly in rare cases when a stomach was overloaded and not emptying properly, so that the addition of anything else could lead to a rupture.
But another thing worth noting is that baking soda is high in salt, and a diet high in salt can cause high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney problems.
Baking soda for constipation has been regularly used for over a century, and one of the main reasons has been because of how effective and affordable it is, and because almost every household has some.
But for regular use, it’s not recommended by doctors because of its high salt content. So if you keep getting constipated, you should look for a more long-term solution.
Stimulant laxatives (chemical laxatives you buy at the drug store) should only be used in extreme cases and as a last resort. (Baking soda and water for constipation is an example of a non-stimulant laxative).
You should only try them after all else fails because long term use is very damaging – it itself can cause extreme constipation and can damage nerves and muscles of the colon.
It’s far better to drink plenty of water, eat your fruits and vegetables, and make sure you’re active for 20 minutes a day. Then in the rare cases you need to use baking soda for constipation.

As I mentioned before, baking soda is more of an emergency solution for constipation. If constipation keeps coming back, and you are consuming enough water and fiber, something else might be going on.
Good and bad bacteria should live in harmony
The intestinal flora is a collective term for all the bacteria that live in the intestine. These intestinal bacteria can be divided into beneficial and harmful bacteria.
Did you know, that in total there are approximately a 100 billion bacteria in your intestines?
In a healthy intestinal flora the most useful and harmful bacteria are in equilibrium with each other. The inside of the intestinal wall in that case is completely occupied with bacteria. The harmful bacteria can not multiply as a result, because there is not enough room and food for new bacteria.

Baking soda is an incredible ingredient.
We all have it sitting in our cabinets for when we want to clean or cook with it, but baking soda actually has a ton of other uses as well, including as an odor eliminator, a teeth whitener, and a drain unclogger.
But there’s another use for this product that beauty bloggers all over the world can’t stop talking about: baking soda as a face cleanser!
When I first learned that people were using baking soda on their faces, I immediately thought it sounded kind of crazy. However, I then looked into it a little more and was surprised to find that there are actually a lot of benefits to using a baking soda face wash.
Even better, baking soda is a much more affordable option than many fancy store-bought cleansers, and beauty gurus claim it works just as well.
Since I already had baking soda in my spice cabinet, I figured I might as well give it a shot. So, I carried my trusty orange box into the bathroom to see if the rumors were true!
Baking Soda Face Wash Benefits
Baking soda has a lot of beauty uses, including as a dry shampoo, a hair volumizer, and a nail cleaner.
The biggest trend among beauty enthusiasts right now, though, is using it as a way to clean and exfoliate your skin.
According to Dr. Oz, baking soda can be used to clear acne and can help exfoliate your skin, making it softer and more vibrant.
Healthy And Natural World explains that baking soda can be used as a daily cleanser, a face mask, and an exfoliator. In addition, it can unclog your pores, remove dirt and oils from your skin, and even prevent acne.
With all these potential benefits, I couldn’t wait to try using my own DIY baking soda face wash…
Baking Soda Face Wash Controversy
However, I eventually read about the potential negative effects.
It wasn’t until after I’d been using baking soda on my face for a few days that I found out how baking soda could negatively impact my skin.
I read multiple studies from Dermatology, the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, and Acta Dermato-venereologicaabout the ways in which baking soda can affect your skin.
It was a lot of information, but what it all boils down to is that everyone’s skin has an “acid mantle” — or an acidic layer — that acts as a barrier to viruses, bacteria, and other harmful contaminants.
Essential Day Spa put it simply when they explained that baking soda (which is alkaline, or naturally basic) can disrupt the skin’s acid mantle. This can cause skin irritation, hyperpigmentation, moisture loss, skin aging, and sun sensitivity.
That being said, many manufactured facial products are also alkaline. The difference with these cleansers and with baking soda is that baking soda is also a physical exfoliant, according to Future Derm.
The longer you use alkaline cleansers, the more damage they can do to your skin.
According to Skin and Tonics, the acid mantle can repair itself after being compromised, but it can take up to 20 hours for the pH to return to normal. In that time, the skin is more susceptible to damage.
Note: Some people react negatively to baking soda, so do a patch test on your arm before trying it on your face.
The Experiment
OK, so now that you have all this information, let me tell you a little about the experiment. Handmaid's tale season 2 download.
Basically, the only thing I could wash my face with for the entire week would be baking soda and water, mixed together into a paste.
Each day, I would wash my face once in the morning and once in the evening. I’d photograph myself each evening to document the experience.
Day 1
Let me preface this by explaining that I don’t have the best skin care routine in the world.
Normally, I wash my face with a store-bought facial wash every time I shower (every day or every other day), and each morning and evening I use a witch hazel toner.
My skin is usually pretty oily, with a few pimples here and there, but I’ve never had bad acne.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the way you see it), I had some extra zits when I started this experiment.
I hoped that the baking soda would clear up the bit of acne that I had!
Using baking soda the way Healthy And Natural World recommended, I dumped a little bit of the powder straight from the box into a small bowl, then added some water to turn it into a paste.
I had to go back and forth with baking soda and water until I created a texture I was comfortable with.
It was harder than I expected to achieve a good paste-like consistency, as it was either too drippy or too thick. This was a problem I had throughout the entire week.
Once I rubbed the baking soda mixture all over my face, I let it sit for about a minute before washing it off.
On day one, I got into the shower after putting the baking soda on my face, which made it extremely easy to wash off. Afterward, my skin felt tighter and cleaner than it had before.
Day 2
I spent most of the second day marveling about how matte my face felt.
Even with no toner, no foundation, and no setting powder, my face didn’t look oily. Usually by mid-morning, my face starts to get shiny and oily, but with the baking soda, it was staying nice and shine-free!
I thought the baking soda would feel rough on my skin, but it was surprisingly soft and smooth. Exfoliating with baking soda seemed to be working pretty well.
After the success I’d had during the day two, I was excited to keep seeing results (hopefully).
I felt more confident with the way my skin looked, despite the fact that I still had some unsightly pimples.
I had never realized that the oiliness of my skin bothered me so much, but since I noticed such a difference with the baking soda, I didn’t want to have to go back to my normal oily skin.
Day 3
Unfortunately, my matte skin was short-lived.
On day three, my face felt oily once again, and I started noticing my pimples more.
Needless to say, I was definitely disappointed.
Day three was definitely a low point for me during this experiment. I had felt so great on days one and day two that I thought the baking soda was really working. Sadly, that didn’t seem to be the case.
Although my face still felt matte directly after rinsing off the baking soda, it didn’t stay oil-free for as long as it had before.
Day three was also when I learned about all the potential negatives baking soda could have on my skin, so my disappointment may have also been somewhat psychosomatic.
Since I wasn’t feeling the benefits as much anymore, I felt like the negatives were outweighing the benefits.
Day 4
On day four, I was definitely still disappointed in the results.
Yet again, my face was oily and greasy throughout the day. I was starting to get frustrated with the process of making the baking soda face wash and using it every morning and evening.
Household Uses For Baking Soda
As you can tell from my use of all-caps in the photo above, I was getting kind of angry that I wasn’t seeing any long-lasting benefits.
Where was the acne reduction, cleaner skin, and unclogged pores?
Day 5
On day five, I was still frustrated.
My zits weren’t going away, new pimples had popped up, and my pores definitely weren’t feeling any cleaner. In fact, I started noticing more blackheads.
Plus, even though it didn’t take much time to apply the face wash, it kept dripping on the floor and on my clothes. It wasn’t nearly as user-friendly as a store-bought face wash.
Day 6
I didn’t think I’d be so excited to get back to my normal skin-care routine, but every night when I went to apply the baking soda, I saw my witch hazel toner staring at me, begging to be used.
By day six, I was more than annoyed with the baking soda. I couldn’t wait to be done with the experiment.
I kept finding patches of baking soda on my skin throughout the day, and it was really annoying.
Day 7
On day seven, I was grateful to be finishing the experiment.
I was glad I had followed through on using the baking soda face wash the entire week, but I was also happy to go back to my boring old skin-care routine.
Is Baking Soda Face Wash Worth It?
Above is a “before” and “after” photo, and I’m only noticing very minor changes.
On day seven, I felt like my face was even oilier than before. Although some of my old pimples had gone away, new ones had popped up.
That being said, here are my overall thoughts on the experiment:
Pros: Baking soda definitely works as a short-term mattifying solution. It’s a soft exfoliator, and it’s a great cleanser in a pinch.
Cons: It’s annoying to have to make the mixture every day. It’s also messy to use, it only works for a few days, and it doesn’t have noticeable long-term benefits (plus, there are all those potential problems I outlined about the skin mantle).
Final Thoughts
Would I use it again? I’d only use it for a quick fix to oily skin, or if I had absolutely nothing else to use. I think I’ll stick to store-bought facial cleansers in the future.
Would I recommend it to a friend? In all honesty, probably not. Obviously, everyone’s skin is different, so this might work better for someone else. With all the potential negatives, though, I just don’t think it’s worth it.

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is widely used in baking.
This is because it has leavening properties, meaning it causes dough to rise by producing carbon dioxide.
Aside from cooking, baking soda has a variety of additional household uses and health benefits.
Here are 23 benefits and uses of baking soda.
Heartburn is also known as acid reflux. It is a painful, burning sensation that rises in the upper region of your stomach and can spread up into your throat (1 ).
It is caused by acid refluxing out of the stomach and up your esophagus, the tube that connects your stomach to your mouth.
A few common causes of reflux are overeating, stress and eating greasy or spicy foods.
Baking soda can help treat heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid. Dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of cold water and drink the mixture slowly (2 ).
Mouthwash is a great addition to a good oral hygiene routine. It reaches corners of your mouth and crevices of your teeth, gums and tongue that may be missed during brushing.
Many use baking soda as a replacement for mouthwash. It can help freshen your breath and provides antibacterial and antimicrobial properties (3 , 4 , 5).
The recipe for baking soda mouthwash is simple. Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of warm water, and then swish as usual.
Canker sores are small, painful ulcers that can form inside your mouth. Unlike cold sores, canker sores do not form on the lips and aren’t contagious.
Research has found that baking soda mouthwash is great for soothing pain caused by canker sores (6 , 7 ).
You can make baking soda mouthwash using the recipe in the previous chapter. Rinse your mouth with this mixture once a day until the canker sore heals.
Baking soda is a popular home remedy for whitening teeth.
Many studies have found that toothpaste containing baking soda is better for whitening teeth and removing plaque than toothpaste without baking soda (8 , 9 , 10 ).
This is likely because baking soda has mild abrasive properties that let it break the bonds of molecules that stain the teeth. It also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help fight harmful bacteria (11 , 12 ).
Surprisingly, human sweat is odorless.
Sweat only gains an odor after it is broken down by bacteria in your armpits. These bacteria convert your sweat into acidic waste products that give sweat its odor (13 , 14 ).
Baking soda can eliminate the smell of sweat by making the odors less acidic. Try patting baking soda onto your armpits and you may notice the difference (15).
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a popular supplement among athletes.
Some studies show that baking soda can help you perform at your peak for longer, especially during anaerobic exercises like high-intensity training and sprinting (16 , 17).
During high-intensity exercise, your muscle cells start producing lactic acid, which is responsible for the burning feeling you get during exercise. Lactic acid also lowers the pH inside your cells, which may cause your muscles to tire.
Baking soda has a high pH, which may help delay fatigue, allowing you to exercise at your peak for longer (18 , 19 ).
For example, one study found that people who took baking soda exercised for an average of 4.5 minutes longer than people who didn’t take baking soda (20 ).
A baking soda bath is often recommended to soothe itchy skin. These baths are especially effective at soothing itches from bug bites and bee stings (21, 22, 23).
Additionally, baking soda may help soothe itching from sunburns. It seems more effective when combined with other ingredients like cornstarch and oatmeal (24, 25, 26).
To make a baking soda bath, add 1–2 cups of baking soda to a lukewarm bath. Make sure the affected area is soaked thoroughly.
For more specific areas, you can create a paste with baking soda and a bit of water. Apply a thick layer of paste to the affected area (27).
Calluses are hard, rough patches of skin that are caused by longtime friction or pressure. Activities that typically cause calluses are frequent walking, gardening or sports.
While calluses aren’t necessarily serious, they can cause pain and discomfort when applying pressure.
Interestingly, studies have found that soaking calluses in a baking soda bath may help soften them, remove any scales and reduce discomfort (28, 29).
People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) slowly lose function of their kidneys.
The kidneys are incredibly important because they help remove excess waste and water from the blood. At the same time, they help balance important minerals like potassium, sodium and calcium (30 ).
Research shows that baking soda may help slow the progression of CKD (31 , 32 , 33).
In a study including 134 adults with CKD, it was found that those taking sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) supplements were 36% less likely to rapidly develop kidney failure than people who did not take the supplements (33).
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide (34 ).
It is often treated with chemotherapy, which works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. Normally, cancer cells grow and divide at a rapid rate (35 ).
Some research shows that baking soda could help chemotherapy medicines work more effectively. Baking soda may make the environment for tumors less acidic, which benefits chemotherapy treatments (36 , 37 , 38 ).
However, the evidence is limited to preliminary indications from animal and cell studies, so more human-based research is needed.
Have you ever opened your fridge and come across a surprisingly foul odor?
Chances are that some foods in your fridge have overstayed their welcome and started spoiling. This foul odor may stick around long after emptying the fridge and cleaning it thoroughly.
Fortunately, baking soda can help freshen a smelly fridge by neutralizing bad odors. It interacts with the odor particles to eliminate them, rather than just masking their smell (39).
Benefits Of Drinking Baking Soda And …
Fill a cup with baking soda and place it in the back of your fridge to neutralize bad odors.
Not all commercial air fresheners eliminate bad odors. Instead, some simply release fragrance molecules that mask bad smells.
In addition, fewer than 10% of air fresheners tell you what they contain. This can be problematic if you are sensitive to chemicals that may be found in air fresheners (40).
Wavepad sound editor registration key. Baking soda is an excellent and safe alternative to commercial air fresheners. It interacts with odor particles and neutralizes them, rather than masking them.
To create a baking soda air freshener, you will need:
- A small jar
- 1/3 cup baking soda
- 10–15 drops of your favorite essential oils
- A piece of cloth or paper
- String or ribbon
Add the baking soda and essential oils to the jar. Cover it with the cloth or paper, and then secure it in place with the string. When the scent starts to fade, give the jar a shake.
Baking soda is an inexpensive way to whiten and clean your laundry.
Baking soda is an alkali — a soluble salt that can help remove dirt and stains. When dissolved in water, an alkali such as baking soda can interact with acids from stains and help remove them (41, 42).
Add half a cup of baking soda to your regular amount of laundry detergent. It also helps soften the water, which means you may need less detergent than usual (43).
The versatility of baking soda makes it a great kitchen cleaner. Not only can it remove tough stains, it also helps eliminate foul odors (44).
To use baking soda in your kitchen, make a paste by mixing baking soda with a small amount of water. Apply the paste to the desired surface with a sponge or cloth and scrub thoroughly.
Here are a few things found in the kitchen you can clean with baking soda:
- Oven
- Stained coffee cups
- Stained marble
- Grease stains
- Kitchen tiles
- Clogged drains
- Tarnished silver
- Microwaves
Garbage bags often have a putrid odor because they contain a variety of decaying waste products. Unfortunately, this odor can spread to your kitchen and other areas of your home.
Fortunately, baking soda can help eliminate garbage odors. These odors are often acidic, so baking soda can interact with odor molecules and neutralize them.
In fact, scientists found that spreading baking soda at the bottom of waste bins can help neutralize garbage odor by 70% (45 ).
A combination of baking soda and vinegar can remove the most stubborn carpet stains.
When baking soda and vinegar are mixed, they create a compound called carbonic acid, which is a common ingredient in cleaning products. This reaction creates a lot of fizzing, which may help break down tough stains (46).
Here’s how you can eliminate stubborn carpet stains with just baking soda and vinegar:
- First, cover the carpet stain with a thin layer of baking soda.
- Next, fill an empty spray bottle with a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and water and spray over the stained area.
- Wait up to an hour or until the surface becomes dry.
- Scrub the baking soda loose with a brush and vacuum the residue.
- The stain should now be completely removed. If there is some baking soda residue left on the carpet, wipe it up with a damp towel.
Like kitchens, bathrooms can be difficult to clean. They have a variety of surfaces that are frequently used and thus need to be cleaned often.
While a variety of commercial bathroom cleaners are available, many people prefer a more natural and cost-effective cleaning option. Baking soda comes in handy because it whitens and disinfects many bathroom surfaces (47 , 48).
Here are a few surfaces you can clean with baking soda:
- Bathroom tiles
- Toilets
- Showers
- Bathtubs
- Bathroom sinks
Make a paste using baking soda and a bit of water. Using a sponge or a cloth, rub the mixture thoroughly onto the surface you want to clean.
Wipe down the surface 15–20 minutes later with a damp cloth.
Many people worry about pesticides on foods. Pesticides are used to prevent crops from damage by insects, germs, rodents and weeds.
Peeling fruit is the best way to remove pesticides. However, it also means you don’t get the important nutrients, such as fiber, vitamins and minerals, found in the skins of many fruits.
Interestingly, recent research has found that soaking fruits and veggies in a baking soda wash is the most effective way to remove pesticides without peeling them.
One study found that soaking fruit in a solution of baking soda and water for 12–15 minutes removed nearly all of the pesticides (49).
Baking soda is a handy alternative to commercial silver polishes.
For this you will need:
- An aluminum baking pan or a baking dish lined with aluminum foil
- 1 cup of boiling water
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
- 1/2 cup of white vinegar
Add the baking soda to the aluminum baking pan and slowly pour in the vinegar. Next, pour in the boiling water and then place the silver in the baking pan.
Almost immediately, the tarnish should begin to disappear, and you can remove most silverware from the pan within thirty seconds. However, heavily tarnished silverware may need to sit in the mixture for up to a minute.
In this mixture, silver undergoes a chemical reaction with the aluminum pan and baking soda. It transfers the tarnish from the silverware onto the aluminum pan or may create pale, yellow residue at the bottom of the pan (50).
Many people have inadvertently scorched the bottom of a pot while cooking.
These can be a nightmare to clean. Fortunately, you can save a scorched pot easily with baking soda and water.
Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the bottom of the pot and add enough water to cover the burnt areas. Bring the mixture to a boil and empty the pan as usual.
If stubborn stains remain, grab a scourer, add a small amount of washing liquid and gently remove the remaining burnt bits.
Interestingly, some fire extinguishers contain baking soda.
They are known as dry chemical fire extinguishers and are used to extinguish oil, grease and electrical fires. Baking soda reacts with the heat to produce carbon dioxide, which smothers and extinguishes the fire.
This means that baking soda can be used to extinguish small oil and grease fires.
However, don’t expect baking soda to extinguish larger house fires. Larger fires draw in more oxygen and can counter the effects of baking soda.
Weeds are pesky plants that can grow in the cracks of your walkways and driveways. They often have deep roots, making them hard to kill without using a chemical weed killer.
Fortunately, you can use baking soda as a cheaper and safer alternative. That’s because baking soda is high in sodium, which creates a harsh environment for weeds.
Sprinkle a few handfuls of baking soda over weeds that are growing in the cracks of your sidewalk, driveways and other weed-infested areas.
However, avoid using baking soda to kill weeds in your flowerbeds and gardens, as it may kill your other plants as well.
Having stinky shoes is a common problem that can be quite embarrassing.
Luckily, baking soda is also a great remedy for freshening up stinky shoes.
